The Oriental eye fly that transmits conjunctivitis newly recorded in China

(Pensoft Publishers) Some grass fly species are known as 'eye flies' as they transmit conjunctivitis, as well as other eye diseases, to both humans and domestic animals. The larvae feed on feces or thrive in decaying flesh, so they can usually be found in birds' nests, excrement or carcasses. In a paper published in the open-access journal ZooKeys, a team of scientists record four grass fly species in China with three of them new to science.
