A team of international scientists have developed a quick and sensitive test for Zika virus: a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay. They validated it in a series of experiments in Zika-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and biological samples from individuals with and without the infection. LAMP was similarly sensitive to the gold-standard PCR detection method, with both methods identifying 19 (95%) of 20 positive human serum RNA preparations; PCR correctly identified 12 negative samples (100%), with LAMP identifying only 11 (92%).
