Authors: Lim BG, Lee IO Abstract The number of elderly patients who frequently access health care services is increasing worldwide as well as in Korea. Anesthesiologists are developing the expertise to care for these elderly patients. In this review, we considered concerns when anesthetizing elderly patients. A comprehensive search of major international databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane) and Korean databases (KoreaMed) was conducted. The search was organized and documents were divided conceptually into three domains: preoperative considerations, intraoperative management, and postoperative problems. Preopera...

AbstractPurposeReducing the time from surgery to adjuvant chemoradiation, by decreasing unnecessary readmissions, is paramount for patients undergoing glioma surgery. The effects of intraoperative risk factors on 30-day readmission rates for such patients is currently unclear. We utilized a predictive model-driven approach to assess the impact of intraoperative  factors on 30-day readmission rates for the cranial glioma patient.MethodsRetrospectively, the intraoperative records of 290 patients who underwent glioma surgery at a single institution by a single surgeon were assessed. Data on operative variables including ...

Abstract The Raphe Pallidus (RPa) is a region of the brainstem that was shown to modulate the sympathetic outflow to many tissues and organs involved in thermoregulation and energy expenditure. In rodents, the pharmacological activation of RPa neurons was shown to increase the activity of the brown adipose tissue, heart rate, and expired CO2 , whereas their inhibition was shown to induce cutaneous vasodilation and a state of hypothermia that, when prolonged, leads to a state resembling torpor referred to as synthetic torpor. If translatable to humans, this synthetic torpor-inducing procedure would be advantageous ...

We report the anaesthetic management of left thoracoscopic sympathectomy in a 5-year-old child with LQTS and epicardial pacemaker in situ. It is very challenging to isolate the lung on one hand and prevent the predisposition to torsadogenic potential on the other.
