Conclusions: Similar long-term outcomes were achieved in the LSKS-SRLA and LSLA-SRLA groups for locally advanced proximal gastric cancer. However, in the aspects of surgical time, length of incision, and postoperative recovery, the LSKS-SRLA group had obvious advantages. PMID: 31737066 [PubMed]

In gastrectomy, postoperative elevation of C-reactive protein (CRP) is thought to be useful for predicting complications. Laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) is less invasive than laparotomy and the elevation of CRP...

ConclusionsPPOI is a common postoperative complication of patients after gastrectomy. Laparoscopic surgery is associated with decreased risk of PPOI in gastric surgery. Patients who underwent open surgery and presented with high level of WBC should be cautious with PPOI.

This study compared treatment options and outcomes based on the Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI).MethodsThis retrospective analysis included patients with gastric cancer treated between August 2008 and December 2017 with synchronous peritoneal metastases only diagnosed by laparoscopy. The three treatments were as follows: (1) cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in combination with pre- and postoperative systemic chemotherapy (n = 58), (2) laparotomy/laparoscopy without CRS, but HIPEC in combination with pre- and postoperative systemic chemotherapy (n = ...

ConclusionsThis trial confirmed the safety of LATG/LAPG. After the non-inferiority of LADG is confirmed in our phase III trial (JCOG0912), LATG/LAPG is expected to be established as one of the standard treatments for clinical stage I gastric cancer.

Authors: Lim KG, Palayan K Abstract Incidence rates of gastric cancer in Malaysia has declined by 48% among males and 31% among females in the latest reporting period of 13 years. Malays used to have age-standardized-rates only a fifth of those in Chinese and Indians, but the incidence among them is slightly rising even as the rates drop in the other races. Besides ethnicity, a low level of education, high intake of salted fish and vegetables, H pylori infection and smoking are risk factors. Consumption of fresh fruit and vegetable is protective. Variation in the strains of H pylori infection affect gastric cancer ...

Conclusions: A median follow-up of 58 months showed that the overall incidence of IH in mini-laparotomy wounds was 2.8%. Multivariate analysis showed that female sex, higher BMI, and presence of comorbidity were significant risk factors of IH. Thus, surgeons should monitor the closure of mini-laparotomy wounds in patients with risk factors of IH undergoing laparoscopic distal gastrectomy. PMID: 30607302 [PubMed]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes after laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) between elderly and non-elderly patients with gastric cancer. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using clinical and follow-up data from 168 patients treated with LTG for gastric cancer at our institution from January 2010 to December 2017. For this study, the short- and long-term outcomes (including tumor recurrence rate, disease-free survival rate, and overall survival rate) were compared between the elderly group (≥70 years) and non-elderly group (

Abstract Staging laparoscopy (SL) is used to assess for radiographically occult metastatic disease and local resectability in selected patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. SL may avoid nontherapeutic laparotomy in patients with unresectable cancer and is associated with shorter length of hospital stay and time to receipt of systemic therapy compared with nontherapeutic laparotomy. With improvements in preoperative imaging, careful patient selection for SL is imperative. SL and peritoneal washings should be considered for patients with distal gastroesophageal and locally advanced gastric cancer before plann...
