Cystatin C as a Potential Biomarker for Neonatal Infants

Patients with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) have been classified into stages 1 –5 according to their serum creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for over three decades. Recently, cystatin C was proposed as an alternative filtration marker for creatinine due to limitations of creatinine measurement in risk prediction, particularly in patients with reduc ed muscle mass.1 Cystatin C is a non-glycosylated, low molecular weight, cation protein that is regularly synthesized by most nucleated cells.
