Assessment of Protein-Energy Wasting: Quest for the Gold Standard

In the November 2014 issue of this journal, Moreau-Gaudry et al.1 reported on a new, simple score to assess protein-energy wasting (PEW). The score (hereafter referred to as French PEW test) was developed from the ARNOS prospective dialysis cohort in 1,443 patients and was associated with mortality at 3.5 years of follow-up. The French PEW test is based on 4 items (serum albumin, body mass index, SCr/BSA, and nPNA), which in itself are based on the proposed diagnostic criteria that were described by the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism in their 2008 consensus article.
