What to Do When Eating What You Want Isn't Working

So many experts today talk about letting go of dieting, eating in tune with your body, and learning to listen to your body's needs. As a food coach, I'm all about learning the whole "eat intuitively" and trying to figure out how to listen to what your body really needs and wants. But what happens when eating what you want just isn't working? Let's say you've finally decided to quit dieting and adopt this more holistic approach to eating. You go to a party and promise yourself you won't restrict, you'll eat what you want like a "normal" human, and enjoy the event. And then when you get there, what you want is the entire dessert table + 3 doggie bags to take home. So, here's the deal... Eating what you want IS a learned skill. BUT...there are also some "sneaky" tricks your mind can play on you that will can massively interfere with your progress. For example: I'm going to eat what I want (i.e. desserts) so that all the cravings get out of my system and then I won't want junk food anymore. I'm going to eat what I want but secretly I feel guilty, am reprimanding myself, and hate on my body each time I eat something I'm not "supposed" to want. I'm going to eat what I want on the weekends, but during the week I'll eat "healthier." I'm going to eat what I want, but I won't eat the foods I "shouldn't" want. If you're eating what you want physically but mentally you're all over the place, than honey, it ain't gonna work for you. You can't have a nice, peaceful, enjoy...
