Extended Oral Antibiotics Continue to be Prescribed in Larger Quantities, but Are We Prescribing Them for the Right Reasons?

We are seeing an annual increase in the number of primary and revision arthroplasty procedures, necessitating efforts to avoid or manage post-operative complications. Despite these efforts, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one such devastating complication following either primary or revision total hip (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that is associated with a large clinical and financial burden. A recent database study identified infection as the most common etiology for revision TKA, followed by mechanical loosening.
