Can α-synuclein oligomers in skin biopsies predict the worsening of cognition in Parkinson’s disease? A single-center longitudinal cohort study

Background: Proximity ligation assay (PLA) has been employed to detect α-synuclein oligomers within synaptic terminals of autonomic fibers in skin biopsies from Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Whether this biomarker can track the progression of PD features is still unknown. We investigated whether the PLA score can predict the future worsening of cognitive functi on in PD.
