Background: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) –associated myelopathy (HAM) is a slowly progressive neurological complication of HTLV-1 infection. The neurological spectrum of HTLV-1 might be broad, including chronic or acute myelopathy, polymyositis, polyneuropathy, dysautonomia, ALS-like syndrome, chronic diffuse encephalomyelopathy, encepha litis, and cognitive deficits.
