Objective clinical registration of tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity during awake stereotactic neurosurgery

Background: Tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity are incapacitating motor signs that can be suppressed with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and ablative surgery (e.g. thalamotomy, pallidotomy). Although clinicians traditionally rely on clinical rating scales for intraoperative evaluation of these signs during awake stereotactic neurosurgery, they have a relatively high inter-rater variability which is also influenced by the experience of the raters. Objective intraoperative assessments of tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity (e.g.
