LKB1 inhibits the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells by activating SIRT6

Most recently, Chen et al. reported that vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC)-specific overexpression of LKB1 in atherosclerotic mice inhibited the phenotypic transition of VSMCs and alleviated lipid accumulation within plaques, leading to the mitigation of atherogenesis [1]. This finding demonstrates the critical role of LKB1 in the phenotypic transformation of VSMCs and atherosclerosis, whereas the underlying mechanisms need further investigation.
