Response Regarding: Data, Statistics, and Humanity: The Fallacy of Numbers Without People
In response to our manuscript, “Mesh Type With Ventral Hernia Repair: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials,” Dr Hung and colleagues analyze the data using a trial sequential analysis and state that “the current evidence is inadequate to conclusively determine whether biologic mesh leads to h igher major complications rates than synthetic mesh.”1 They suggest that we randomize 3239 patients. We believe the blunt use of mathematics and statistics ignores real-world practicalities and the safety of patients undergoing randomized controlled trials.
