The rise of GLP-1 agonists: considerations for Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists are in a class of medications used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Some of the common brand name medications such as Ozempic ® (Novo Nordisk, Denmark), Wegovy® (Novo Nordisk, Denmark), and Trulicity® (Eli Lilly, USA) have gained mainstream attention and popularity in recent years particularly for their application for weight loss. Given the rise in number of patients taking GLP-1 agonists, an emerging area of concern i n healthcare is how best to manage these medications prior to patients undergoing anesthesia.
