Society of Pediatric Nurses' pre-licensure core competencies model, second edition

Since 1986, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has published the Essentials, a series of documents that outline competencies that reflect minimal expectations for entry into practice as a nursing generalist (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). The framework, which defines quality in nursing education, lacks, however, specificity to nursing practice specialties. In 2017, the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN) convened a task force composed of pediatric nursing experts whose purpose was to develop a document that identified pre-licensure nursing competencies specific to the practice of pediatric nursing: the science, art, and practice discipline devoted to the care of infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and their families.
