Preoperative Optimization of Patients Using Tobacco

Despite the steady decline of tobacco use over the last five decades, smoking remains the number one cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, accounting for an estimated 480,000 deaths each year.1 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46 million (18.7%) adults in the United States currently use tobacco, with traditional cigarette tobacco products being the most prevalent (11.5%), followed by electronic cigarette (4.5%) use.2 Regardless of the method of delivery, tobacco use poses a major threat to long-term health outcomes, with smoking methods having the most well-documented deleterious effects.
