Examining disparities in regional anaesthesia and pain medicine

Br J Anaesth. 2024 Mar 19:S0007-0912(24)00091-6. doi: 10.1016/j.bja.2024.02.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn high-resource countries, health disparities exist in both treatment approaches and health outcomes. Race and ethnicity can serve as proxies for other socioeconomic factors and social determinants of health such as income, education, social support, and residential neighbourhood, which strongly influence health outcomes and disparities. In regional anaesthesia and pain medicine, disparities exist across several surgical specialties including obstetrics, paediatrics, and orthopaedic surgery. Understanding these disparities will facilitate development of solutions aimed at eliminating disparities at the patient, physician/provider, and healthcare system levels.PMID:38508942 | DOI:10.1016/j.bja.2024.02.015
