New and emerging frontiers in penile prosthesis microbiome research

Inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantation is the gold standard surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction refractory to more conservative treatments. While infection of IPPs is a rare, but devastating, complication requiring device explant, devices may also be explanted for other indications including mechanical failure and pain. Although it was traditionally thought that any device biofilm leads to clinical infection1,2, recent work has confirmed the presence of biofilms on nearly all devices, even those without traditional signs of infection.
