Effect of Adding Early Bedside Cycling to Inpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation on Physical Function and Length of Stay After Heart Valve Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Heart valve replacement surgery is a well-established treatment for severe valvular heart disease.1 After heart valve surgery, there is an improvement in hemodynamic parameters; however, the functional capacity remains sub-optimal due to physical inactivity and deconditioning.2,3 Hypoventilation and reduced lung volumes after surgery further reduce physical capacity and increase the length of hospital stays.4 Prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay is associated with lower survival rates, increased hospital costs, and reduced ICU bed availability.
