Older adults in the ICU: Are we ready?

The number of older adults in Australia is increasing, and quickly —partly owing to the Baby Boom of the 1950s and 1960s but also because of increasing life expectancy. Australians now live longer—up 10 years more than the life expectancy of 72 years half a century ago. The proportion of older adults in Australia is projected to be 22% within the next two years (2026) up from 16% in 2020 and 8.3% in the 1970s.
