Surgical Considerations for Osteoporosis, Osteopenia, and Vitamin D Deficiency

This issue of Orthopedic Clinics of North America focuses on bone health and its effect on surgical outcomes. Osteopenia and the more severe form of osteoporosis are major contributors to fragility fractures and adversely affect outcomes of orthopedic treatment. Lifestyle and age are factors associated with low bone density, but the condition also occurs in children and adolescents, is secondary to genetic bone disorders, chronic systemic and metabolic disorders, medications, and can even be idiopathic.
