Robotic Surgery in Pediatric Urology

The da Vinci robot first entered human clinical trials in 1998 and was FDA approved shortly thereafter in 2000. The first reported pediatric robotic surgery was completed in 2002. Since that time, the number of robotic pediatric urology cases has steadily increased. The most commonly performed surgeries are robotic pyeloplasty and ureteral reimplantation. Robotic surgery has been shown to provide several benefits compared to open surgery including less pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and improved cosmesis.
