Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide with an annual incidence of over 1.5 million cases. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates approximately eight hundred thousand strokes occur annually with an expected increase in incidence due to the aging “baby-boomer” population.
