The role of prophylactic internal iliac artery ligation in abnormally invasive placenta undergoing caesarean hysterectomy

Introduction and objectives of the study: Incorrect implantation of the placenta is observed when the placental villi penetrate through a very thin layer of the decidua, in some cases they can reach the uterine muscle and in extreme cases even the peritoneum or bladder wall. Complications associated with incorrect placental implantation include the risk of implantation site hemorrhage and impaired retraction and uterine atony after delivery. In addition to pharmacological methods of devascularization of the uterine muscle, more advanced surgical techniques are also used, including bilateral ligation of the internal iliac arteries.
