Evaluation of a Low-Cost Hybrid Airway Model to Train Nurse Anesthesiology Students in the Performance of Ultrasound-Guided Cricothyrotomy

Delivering anesthesia is a challenge for both the patient and the provider when facing airway complications. A complication feared by the anesthesia provider is a hypoxic brain injury resulting from the inability to secure an airway (Cook, 2018). According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists difficult airway algorithm, if ventilation is not adequate and intubation attempts are unsuccessful, the next step is to perform a cricothyroidotomy (Apfelbaum et al., 2022). The 4th National Audit Project (NAP4) of the Royal College of Anesthetists and Difficult Airway Society projected that airway management resulted in one serious problem per 22,000 general anesthetics, with death or brain damage complicating 1:150,000 (Frerk et al., 2015).
