24. A Qualitative Analysis of Young People ’s Experiences With Self-Managed Abortion

With increasing restrictions on abortion care, more people are seeking ways to end a pregnancy outside the formal health care system, also known as self-managed abortion (SMA). Prior research suggests that young people may be more likely to attempt SMA given concerns about privacy and confidentiality as well as limited experience with or mistrust of the healthcare system. In the present study, we conduct in-depth interviews with people who report having attempted to self-manage an abortion in their youth to better understand their experiences.
