177. Supporting Youth Who Have Lost a Parent: Longitudinal Associations Between Aspects of the Parent-Child Relationship, Expressive Suppression, and Mental Health Outcomes

Learning how to support parentally bereaved youth is more relevant than ever following the unprecedented loss of life from COVID-19 (CDC, 2023; Kidman et al., 2021). Interestingly, there is considerable variation in youth ’s outcomes, with trajectories of increased risk for mental health problems and prolonged grief (e.g., Melhem et al., 2008; Pham et al., 2018) as well as resilience (e.g., Lin et al., 2004, Dowdney, 2000). Understanding what differentiates these contrasting trajectories can facilitate youth agency and promote resilience.
