Letter to the editor: A comment on grey literature in hernia surgery using biological mesh

With great interest, we read “Biologic versus synthetic mesh in open ventral hernia repair; A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials”1 by Dr Lu’s research group in Texas. Congratulations to the authors for this well-performed and written study where they found that biologic compared to synthet ic mesh had increased hernia recurrences and surgical site infection. Given the high cost of biologic mesh compared to synthetic mesh and the poor outcomes, surgeons should scrutinize the use of biologic mesh.
