Oral anticoagulants status after acute ischemic stroke and prognosis in patients with atrial fibrillation

Oral anticoagulation substantially reduces the risk for ischemic stroke (IS) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Studies have shown that anticoagulation therapy reduces the risk of stroke by nearly 70  % and the risk of all-cause mortality by 25 % in patients with AF.1,2 Nevertheless, the risk of recurrent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation-associated ischemic stroke (AFAIS) is high, ranging from 10 % to 20 % during the first year,3 which is probably due to a lack of standard doses a nd types of oral anticoagulants (OACs).
