We Still Don ’t Know When to Close a Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Infants Born Very Premature

Infants born very prematurely with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) are at increased risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and mortality.1,2 Surgical ligation is used less frequently but is more likely to occur in infants who are smaller and more medically complex and is associated with necrotizing enterocolitis, BPD, and severe intraventricular hemorrhage.3 The majority of recent studies on PDA have focused on refining diagnostic parameters to identify populations that are most at-risk, optimizing pharmacologic management strategies, and improving the timing of medical treatment.
