An acute care surgeons's dilemma: Operative vs. non-operative management of emergency general surgery conditions in patients with recent colorectal cancer treatment

Given that colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy in the United States, it comes as no surprise that a significant number of patients who present with an emergency general surgical (EGS) condition have a history of CRC.1 In fact, an analysis of over 3 million EGS presentations highlighted that 8.9  % of such patients have a concurrent malignancy.2 In some of these patients, the history of CRC may be remote and have little or no impact on their current presentation, diagnosis and treatment.
