Indications for Urgent and Emergent Hemodialysis

The National Kidney Foundation states that hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, fluid overload, and uremic pericarditis are commonly accepted indications for acute renal replacement therapy. However, there is minimal literature supporting these guidelines. Furthermore, there is no data to date that addresses the timing and urgency of hemodialysis initiation. The placement of hemodialysis catheters after-hours is resource intensive and overburdens an already stressed system. The aim of this study is to identify which patients can safely wait until daytime hours to undergo catheter placement.
