Is There Prognostic Discordance for Infants with Neurological Conditions Between Physicians and Parents?

Lack of mutual understanding regarding neurological prognosis (ie, prognostic discordance) can lead to disagreement and conflict between parents and physicians, added distress, and dissatisfaction with outcomes. For infants with neurological conditions, the level of motor, speech, and cognitive function ultimately reached will contribute to the degree of autonomy eventually developed, the resources needed for daily living, and, for some, overall quality of life. Thus, neurological prognosis often carries heavy weight with parents and physicians making decisions for critically ill infants.
