The Role of Pediatricians in Recognizing Postpartum Depression and/or Psychosis

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this paper is to describe prominent features of several postpartum mood disorders — postpartum blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis and emphasize the vital and unique position pediatricians are in to detect and manage postpartum mental illness.Recent FindingsFor each of these three conditions, we present data regarding their incidence and prevalence, identify risk factors and prognosis, and explore the role pediatricians can play in assessment and treatment. Although definitive studies are still needed, maternal mental health screenings performed in conjunction with clinical interventions are associated with improved rates of illness detection, assessment, referral, and treatment.SummaryPediatricians play a pivotal role in the early identification and intervention for mothers experiencing postpartum mental illness. Their responsibilities may include psychoeducation, counseling, and care coordination to support the mental well-being of new mothers during this critical phase. Their active involvement contributes to ensuring that mothers receive the vital support and treatment they need, ultimately benefiting both mother and child.
