Is There Prognostic Discordance for Infants with Neurologic Conditions between Physicians and Parents?

Lack of mutual understanding regarding neurologic prognosis (ie, prognostic discordance) can lead to disagreement and conflict between parents and physicians, added distress, and dissatisfaction with outcomes. For infants with neurologic conditions, the level of motor, speech, and cognitive function ultimately reached will contribute to the degree of autonomy eventually developed, the resources needed for daily living, and for some, overall quality of life. Thus, neurologic prognosis often carries heavy weight with parents and physicians making decisions for critically ill infants.
