10.3 Fatherhood in El Salvador: Strengths and Challenges

Leveraging the inherent strengths of families is critical to child health outcomes. Although Salvadoran families struggle with issues such as machismo, economic crisis, immigration, and gang violence, there are significant strengths and protective factors that are underrecognized. This is particularly true with regard to the role of the father in the family system. For example, “familism” assigns the father with the responsibility to provide economic stability and emotional support for family members.
