League-FIT: A gender-sensitised weight loss program for men using rugby league

Introduction: In 2018, two thirds of Australian adults were overweight or obese, increasing the risk Type II diabetes. Sports clubs provide a powerful and comfortable gender-sensitised environment to engage men for health promotion. In Queensland, rugby league is the number one spectated sport and predominately attended by men. There is robust evidence for the effectiveness of weight loss programs in men for soccer (Football Fans in Training [FFIT]). However, evidence for the popular Australian sport of Rugby League, has yet to be examined for weight loss programs in men.
