A randomised, assessor-blinded, parallel group feasibility trial of flat, flexible school shoes for adolescents with patellofemoral pain

Introduction: Treatment options for adolescents with patellofemoral pain (PFP) are limited. Flat, flexible footwear are effective at reducing patellofemoral joint (PFJ) loads during running in those with PFP, as well as asymptomatic adults. Adolescents spend a large percentage of their weekday time in school shoes which often have a stiff, raised heel and inflexible midsole; features known to elevate PFJ loads. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of conducting a large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) on the effect of flat, flexible school footwear, when compared to traditional school footwear, in adolescents with PFP.
