Biological age as a predictor of unplanned intensive care readmission during the same hospitalization

Following apparent successful intensive care unit (ICU) discharge between 5% and 10% of the patients are readmitted to the ICU during the same hospitalization,1,2 increasing the overall morbidity and resource requirements of the critically ill.3-5 Multiple risk factors for unplanned ICU readmission have been identified, including incomplete resolution of the primary critical illness evidenced by high levels of inflammatory markers at ICU discharge, development of new complications in the hospital wards such as venous thromboembolism and nosocomial infection, and worsening of preexisting comorbidity.
