Subpial Hemorrhage in Extremely Premature Neonate: A Rare Finding in a Rare Cohort

Subpial hemorrhage is a rare form of intracranial hemorrhage in which blood accumulates in the potential space between the pia mater and the glia limitans. Subpial hemorrhage may be caused by injury to the glial limitans and rupture of vessels inserting into the tissue layer. The hemorrhage in the subpial space is thought to compress the subpial veins and obstruct cortical venous outflow, increasing risk of focal cortical and subcortical hemorrhage and infarction1.
