Thoughts on Pediatric Gynecology and Vaginal Bleeding in the Prepubertal Child

When I was first starting to practice pediatric and adolescent gynecology (PAG), in the early 1980s, I was much more comfortable seeing adolescents than I was seeing pediatric patients. Adolescents have bodies that are close to adult size and configuration, and they are able to tell me about their concerns. Many aspects of adolescent gynecology felt similar to those of adult gynecology —except of course, all of the developmental, psychological, and social aspects of adolescents’ lives, that should not be underestimated, and which impact our care of adolescents.
