Structure and Biological Activity of an Arabinogalactan from Ferula tenuisecta

The arabinogalactan AG-Ften of molecular mass 40 kDa consisting of galactose and arabinose in a 25:10.6 ratio was isolated from the aerial part ofFerula tenuisecta. AG-Ften was found to consist of D-galactopyranoses bound byβ-1,6-glycoside bonds as the main chain and a side chain ofα-arabinose,β-galactose, and 4-O-methylglucuronic acid by using methylation, GC, GC-MS, and13C NMR spectroscopy. TheF. tenuisecta polysaccharides exhibited bifidogenic activity.
