HIP, HIPAA, Hooray: Responding to Negative Online Reviews

From home furniture to hotels to healthcare, many of us now rely on online reviews before trying something new.1 Online physician ratings for academic oral and maxillofacial surgeons are generally positive.2 However, there are some patients who may post false, inflammatory, or negative comments.3 The existence of these reviews can have an outsized influence on a provider ’s practice and their reputation given the relatively low volume of online reviews for many oral and maxillofacial surgeons.2 The provider is unable to respond directly in a patient-specific manner to address these negative reviews online due to patient privacy laws.
