An ulcerated lesion of the left maxillary mucosa

A 67-year-old male patient presented with an ulcerated lesion of the left maxillary mucosa adjacent to the first and second molar teeth, which had appeared six weeks previously (Figure 1). Ulceration was present on both the palatal and buccal gingivae. No other significant intra-oral findings were present. Extra-oral examination revealed no apparent lymph node abnormality. The patient was receiving methotrexate 15mg per week for treatment of polyarthritis for five years; no other contributory medical history was present.
