Functional and molecular profiling of hematopoietic stem cells during regeneration

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) support lifelong production of mature blood cells and need to be precisely regulated to ensure a balance between mature cellular output and long-term sustainability. While HSCs are the only hematopoietic cells that harbor both self-renewal and long-term multilineage capacity, they do not constitute a homogenous population. Subtle differences in lineage priming and reconstitution potential create a continuum of non-discrete HSC subtypes 1-4. Similarly, the differentiation of HSCs into more restricted progenitors is a gradual, rather than stepwise, process 5, 6.
