Brief overview of the updated third edition of the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

The 2023, 3rd edition of the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) is an updated version of the widely used system for reporting thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) results. The new edition reflects advances in the field of thyroid cytology since the publication of the 2nd edition. The most significant changes in the 3rd edition include: a simplified reporting structure with single names for each of the six diagnostic categories; updated and recalculated risk of malignancy for each category; harmonization of nomenclature with the 2022 World Health Organization classification of thyroid tumors; and discussion of the expanded use of ancillary testing in diagnostic and precision medicine.
