Is it time to move the needle on accelerated venom skin testing?

Almost 50 years since its first description, the sequential skin test protocol remains a cornerstone of diagnostic testing for Hymenoptera venom allergy.1,2 Stepwise venom skin testing is endorsed by the current United States and European practice guidelines and is included as the recommended testing algorithm in package inserts.3 –5 The testing protocol requires significant time, supplies, cost, and expert technique to ensure reliability of results. Despite reports of accelerated skin test protocols in the literature, consistent adaptation of faster testing options has yet to occur owing to lack of data in large population s and perceived risks of venom skin testing.
