Mothers of Children With Special Health Care Needs: Exploring Caregiver Burden, Quality of Life, and Resiliency

When women enter motherhood, most never expect their child to have a chronic health care condition. Approximately 19% of all children are categorized as having a special health care need in the United States (Child Health Data, 2021). Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are those with physical, developmental, or psychiatric conditions lasting longer than 1 year and require health care services at a greater rate (Child Health Data, 2021; McPherson et al., 1998; Simon et al., 2014). Mothers are often the primary caregivers for children in households, and there is no difference in households with CSHCN.
