How to Fully Leverage the Power of Electronic Health Records for Research

Clinical research studies are essential for advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. However, because conducting research studies can be time consuming and costly, researchers are incentivized to complete the study even if conclusions cannot be drawn. Before embarking, it is important to conduct a feasibility analysis to ensure that the study is possible and worthwhile. Self-service analytical (SSA) tools are a new avenue to improve the research experience; however, these tools are considerably underused by many physicians. This Editorial will go over what SSA tools are, how to use them, best practices, and examples of studies that have successfully used them.
