Recommendation of Simultaneously Assessing Abdominal Fat and Muscle —A Clue to Disclose a Mystery of the “Obesity Paradox”

I recently read an interesting article by Iida et  al., published in the Journal of Renal Nutrition.1 In this article, Iida et al. prospectively examined the association of the abdominal fat area (AFA), which is composed of a visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) measured by computed tomography (CT), and all-cause mortality in p atients receiving hemodialysis. The authors found that the ratio of VFA to AFA (%VFA) increased each year gradually among surviving patients. However, a higher %VFA at baseline was independently associated with all-cause mortality.
